Q: I can’t remember the last time I worked out. Can I still do CrossFit?
A: Absolutely!! All CrossFit workouts can be “scaled” or modified to your fitness level. We will take you from where you are right now, no matter what condition that is (or how old you are), to where you want to be!! It is a program that is based on and incorporates functional movements (meaning squatting, jumping, pushing pulling, etc.). Everyone can complete these movements (if you can sit in a chair you can squat, if you can open a door you can pull, if you get out of bed then you can sit up, etc.) but the catch is that these movements are performed at a high intensity level, which is where the challenge lies. CrossFit is a fitness program designed to safely prepare you for everyday tasks you need to complete and the energy level you need to complete those tasks, whether you are a mother chasing after your kids, a professional working 16 hour days or an athlete wanting to improve your performance.
Q: When I’ve gone to gyms in the past, I never knew what to do. How will I know what to do in a CrossFit gym in order to get results?
A: CrossFit WOD’s (workout of the day) are planned for you everyday and in advance so that you don’t have to plan what you are going to do when you walk in the door. Personal trainers, or “coaches” as we like to call them, are available to you at all times to help you with questions, form and positive motivation when needed.
Q: What kinds of movements or exercises will I be doing and how are they beneficial?
A: CrossFit workouts incorporate weightlifting (using barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, etc), gymnastics (pullups, rope climbs, handstands, etc) and cardio exercises (running, rowing, jump roping, etc). Some of our favorite movements, such as burpees (you’ll love them!) incorporate more than one of these principals at the same time. These movements are all utilized in order to achieve improvements and results in what CrossFit considers the “10 Aspects of Fitness”. Those are endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility and balance. Who wouldn’t want to improve at least one, if not all of those things??
Q: As a female, is the weightlifting aspect of these workouts going to cause me to “bulk up”?
A: No. CrossFit is not a bodybuilding system. We do not lift any weights with the sole intention of inflating our muscles, although you will see improved tone and definition (that’s a good thing!!). In fact, most CrossFitters are well built, but very lean.
Q: Gyms are intimidating and no one likes to feel like the “newbie”. Am I going to be uncomfortable?
A. Part of the CrossFit experience is not only the physical results from the workouts, but the amazing community of CrossFitters that work together, want to help one another and want to celebrate reaching goals together!! There is no confusing equipment or unwelcoming members/staff. Trainers are always on hand to help you with movements, and often times members help one another as well. We want our members to feel good about their achievements and part of a greater community looking to change and improve their lives in a positive way.
